During my second trimester I turned the big 4-0! I was dreading this number for quite some time especially when doctors labeled me “advanced maternal age”. With this birthday came a laundry list of concerns and issues that may come up during my pregnancy:
- Gestational Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure
- High Birth Weight
- Birth Defects
- BLAH BLAH BLAH
As I have said many times during my pregnancy and in my blog, always advocate for yourself. You aren’t just a number. You are a person. I refused to be generalized and took extra good care of myself as my pregnancy went on. I wasn’t going to succumb to stereotypical issues just because I was a little older. Age made me better. Stronger. Smarter.
For years I had visions of a big 70’s themed 40th birthday bash but as my birthday approached I realized I didn’t need a party. I had everything I ever wanted. A husband who I love and adore, a career that fulfills me on so many levels and a baby girl on the way. I have plenty of time to have parties in the future. Right now my focus was elsewhere.
If you are turning 40, close to it or past it, don’t let that number get in your way. Thanks to incredible science and medicine our lives and our wishes don’t have to expire at midnight when we turn 40. We can dream as big as we want to. Sure, our road might be longer, more expensive, more challenging. But the best journeys are worth the ride. Trust me.
