I was very lucky. For all the struggle and work it took for me to get pregnant, my pregnancy was healthy and easy. As I entered the last month I knew home plate was in my sight. My Dr. had told me from the beginning I would be induced in my 39th week if I didn’t go early because of my age so I was getting closer and closer each day. Then out of no where, I was tossed a curve ball.
I went for my weekly ultrasound at the perinatal office and my blood pressure was high. It has been textbook perfect all along and this was the second time it went up in 2 weeks. Hmmm. Dr. said baby looked great but to be on the safe side I would have to do a 24 hour urine test to see if I was spilling in protein and coming down with preeclampsia. Nah, I thought. I’m good. I took home my jug and planned to ace this test like I had all the others.
How does this test work you might ask? Every time you went to the bathroom you had to collect your sample and pour it all into the jug, which had to be refrigerated by the way. After 24 hours you brought it to the lab and had a blood test and waited for the results.
I went to my OB the next day and my pressure was fine and my urine sample looked good so we assumed all was well. It was week 36. She said we would pick an induction date the following week. I left calm and went on my way.
Monday I was back at the perinatal office and it appeared I did in fact develop preeclampsia. It turns out this can be common for first time moms at the end of pregnancy. The Dr. I met with said the baby was healthy but recommended I be induced to deliver that week. Marc and I were like deer in headlights! We went home and awaited a call from the OB’s office.
And wouldn’t you know, my OB was on vacation that week! They didn’t want me to wait until she was back the following week so I accepted my birth plan of having her deliver my baby would be altered. The following day I got the call to head in to the hospital on Thursday evening, June 7th. I hung up the phone and cried out of nerves and excitement. We were days away from meeting our little girl! Our hospital bag had already been packed and we enjoyed our final two nights just the two of us.
Remember, it doesn’t matter how well you plan, sometimes there is curve ball that throws you for a loop. Infertility and pregnancy are full of them so you must remain as calm as possible and let the details fall into place as they must. As long as the plan is to ensure a healthy Mommy and baby, don’t stress over the small stuff.
